Healthy Hot Cocoa

I'm sipping my usual healthy morning hot chocolate and stitching my next pattern. It has roses and butterflies.

But, let's talk about the frothy cocoa recipe. Yes, it's possible to have a rich, intensely-flavored cup of hot cocoa that's healthy and crave-worthy. This one is brimming with antioxidants, flavonoids, vitamins and minerals.

This hot cocoa is naturally sweetened with pure maple syrup or you can use my Vanilla Sugar . It's made with So Delicious Unsweetened Coconut Milk Beverage. It's a nutritious, modern riff on the typical sugar-bomb packets of my childhood.

I've been making this coconut milk cocoa for years. Keep this recipe for when you yearn for creamy and steamy cups of cocoa. If you're like me, you'll be enjoying it year round.

Healthy Hot Cocoa

Makes One Serving

Some Notes & Tips:

Hershey's Unsweetened Cocoa may not have a high fat content like some other ones. But it makes a creamy cup of cocoa. There are lots of organic and raw cocoa powders out there now too. Some are very expensive and completely tasteless. Some are bitter. If organic is your thing, you may need to test a few to find one you like. I love Rapunzel Organic Cocoa powder for it's chocolatey rich flavor.

I use my Mr. Coffee Cocomotion for this recipe. It's so easy. It mixes and heats everything at once. A blender will work too.

I like my cocoa on the bittersweet side. Use more maple syrup to suit your taste.

Sometimes I add a few dark chocolate chips to the finished cocoa. I pop the mug into the microwave to make it extra hot and rich.

A tiny pinch of sea salt brings out the chocolate flavor.

A sprinkle of cinnamon will give it a Mexican hot cocoa flavor.

It's so delicious with a dollop of  my Vanilla Bean Coconut Cream

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of Unsweetened So Delicious Dairy Free Coconut Milk Beverage
  • 2 tablespoons of Unsweetened Cocoa Powder. I use Hershey's Cocoa or Rapunzel Organic Cocoa Powder
  • 1 tablespoon of pure maple syrup, my vanilla sugar  or your favorite sweetener to your taste
  • A tiny pinch of salt. I use fine sea salt.
  • A sprinkle of cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

Place all the ingredients in a Cocomotion. Serve once the machine has stopped blending and heating the mixture. Alternately, place the ingredients in a blender and whiz to combine. Heat the mixture on the stove or in a microwave safe mug.

Cheers!
